An adoption-friendly assignment

BE is in first grade this year and we are really pleased with her teacher (MP), especially because we had a hard time communicating with her kindergarten teacher.

Recently, BE brought home an assignment called “Memory Book.” There was a list of a questions, mostly regarding the students’ early years, such as “tell me about my first steps,” or “tell me about my first doctor visit.” The students were supposed to pick three, have their parents respond, and then write the answers in their books.

When I first saw it, I was prepared for the worst. However, about three-quarters of the way down the list, I came across this question, “tell me about the day I was adopted.” Needless to say, I was overjoyed. I told BE that she didn’t have to choose this question; I was just happy that MP had thought to include families like us. BE did end up selecting this question, as well as “tell me about the day I was born,” and “tell me about my favorite ________ (toy, blanket, etc.)”

Thankfully, we have Aunt S. She’s the only reason we could answer the question about the day BE was born. Aunt S agreed to help BE with this question, and I helped with the other two. What I expected to be a nightmare, turned out to be rather mild. We survived our first family history school assignment!
