We did it our way

To continue my impromptu series on decision making

As I’ve mentioned before, I seem to have developed an unfortunate knack for making controversial decisions. I’ve made these decisions (including the adoption) because I believed it was truly the right thing to do. And, that brings me to the topic of what is right and wrong. I do believe in a few absolute truths, but very few of them.

In my opinion, most things are simply a matter of taste or preference. Although some choices may not appeal to everyone, and many may even see them as improper, it is ultimately up to the individual to follow his or her conscience in choosing what is right. Of course, I’m speaking of matters of preference, not criminal or immoral behavior.

It goes without saying that since I’m a mother now, I don’t make decisions based only on my own desires; naturally I consider what is best for my family. But, this still leaves many options legitimately open.

So, when J and I are older and we think about our life, I hope we’ll be able to relate to the Frank Sinatra song, “My Way”; that we will have lived according to our consciences.

My Way

And now the end is near
And so I face the final curtain
My friend I’ll say it clear
I’ll state my case of which I’m certain

I’ve lived a life that’s full
I traveled each and every highway
And more, much more than this
I did it my way

Regrets I’ve had a few
But then again too few to mention
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exemption

I planned each charted course
Each careful step along the byway
And more, much more than this
I did it my way

Yes there were times I’m sure you knew
When I bit off more than I could chew
{ From: http://www.elyrics.net/read/f/frank-sinatra-lyrics/my-way-lyrics.html }
But through it all when there was doubt
I ate it up and spit it out, I faced it all
And I stood tall and did it my way

I’ve loved, I’ve laughed and cried
I’ve had my fill, my share of losing
And now as tears subside
I find it all so amusing

To think I did all that
And may I say not in a shy way
Oh no, oh no, not me
I did it my way

For what is a man what has he got
If not himself then he has not
To say the things he truly feels
And not the words of one who kneels
The record shows I took the blows
And did it my way

Yes it was my way
