BE has asked me several times whether I like being a mom. And to be honest, sometimes I feel like shouting “no,” or just saying “it’s ok.” I want to always be honest with my kids, so sometimes I struggle with how to present the truth gently instead of harshly (because I can be very harsh). It’s not that I regret being a mom, but it is hard, and I want to present my kids with a complete picture of what it’s like to be parent. So, when BE asks me whether or not I like being a mom, I tell her, “sometimes”, “most of the time”, or “mostly.” Have you ever been asked this? If so, how do you handle it?
Being a parent is the hardest. My kids have asked me that in the past as well as -Do you have a favorite.I always try to answer honestly.Yes I like being your parent all the time but I don’t like trying to do it right sometimes.I tell them I also have a favorite at times,it is the one that needs me most, and they all do at one time or another.
Great response, Lexiesnana!
Hmmm… This is a hard one bc you are so right, there are some days when it is clear that parenting does not feel so fun. Perhaps it is helpful to differentiate. “Yes, I love being your mom.” from “Sometimes the decisions/jobs that come with being a mom are tough but any hard parts are worth it bc I get to be your mom.” think of it like a vacation. Getting there isn’t always so fun, but you still like going bc once you are there it’s worth it. ;).
Good point, thank you!
There are days where it is hard. I always try my hardest to be honest with them. “Some days are great, and some days are hard. The great days outnumber the hard ones.”
Great response, Kelly
That’s a tough one, and Lexiesnana is very wise.
Like you, I find parenting very challenging and, like you, I try to be as truthful as I can with my kids. I might say something like this (hope I would be able to think of it in the moment):
“I’m so glad I’m your mom — my life would be so empty without you. Being responsible for another person is a big deal, and sometimes I feel overwhelmed by that.”
Thanks for the suggestion, Lori!
